CICCC Update-12 June 2008 Meeting

EPA Licence review

Quentin Cooke of the EPA told the committee that EPA is not comfortable with the present licence limits for emissions from Terminals Coode Island facility, and is undertaking a review of Terminals licence. The objective will be to tighten emission limits in line with present storage practice and recent monitoring results, which generally show Terminals to be very well below existing licence limits.

Residential use opposite Coode Island

The owner of 64/91 Moreland Street, Footscray has been refused a permit for the residential use of the building, and has appealed the decision to VCAT. The Minister for Planning has written to VCAT, providing his reasons for taking the view that the matter "raises a major issue of policy, namely the interaction between industrial uses and sensitive uses in the port environs area." The Minister has requested that VCAT to exercise caution in its review of the matter.

Maribyrnong City Council sends out Community Brochure

Theo Pykoulas told the committee about a new community brochure which Council will distribute to 12,000 Maribyrnong residents within a 2 kilometre distance of Major Hazard Facilities at Coode Island, Yarraville, West Footscray and Tottenham. The brochure will be available in English and twelve other languages. A fridge magnet will also be distributed, providing advice to residents about emergency procedures, and radio programs and Council telephone numbers where further information can be obtained in an emergency.

Those residents will also be asked if they wish to be included in a telephone emergency communication initiative by Maribyrnong City Council.
