CICCC Update—5 March 2019 Meeting

Sparge Curtain upgrade

The 2019 HSEQ Improvement/Action Plan contains an item "Review and upgrade Air Sparge" (dependent on EPA discussions). Community Member Faye Simpson sought advice on the reason for this item. Phil Jones advised that the sparge curtain intercepts the flow of contaminated ground water from the site, associated with past industrial uses. The flow is towards the Maribyrnong River, and is quite slow. The Sparge curtain works by passing a stream of air bubbles up through the strata carrying the contaminated soil. However the sparge curtain injection system is quite old, is severely degraded and requires replacement.
